Three ways to get the perfect natural tan

Not only does a healthy, natural tan make you look attractive, active, and toned, it boosts your mood by giving you loads of vitamin D! So, if you need pointers to create a perfect natural tan, read on to learn our favorite three ways of getting a healthy glow.

  1. Prepare smart for tanning outside

Tanning outside is the best way to go (and much healthier than sitting in a tanning bed), but there’s a right and a wrong way to do it. Prepare your skin for tanning by applying a moisturizing sunscreen before you hit the beach and drinking plenty of water before, during, and after your tan sesh. If you plan to go swimming, make sure to use a waterproof sunscreen. To get the most coverage, pick a sunscreen that says “broad spectrum.” 30 SPF is fine, but you can go higher if you prefer.

Set yourself up outside in a comfortable position…but don’t get too comfortable. To ensure an even tan, it’s best to switch positions every 15 to 30 minutes. This way, you don’t get burned in one area without tanning another.

Re-apply sunscreen every two hours to make sure that you don’t burn. Sunburns are unhealthy, uncomfortable, and they hurt. Protect your eyes (and prevent wrinkles) by wearing sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat when you tan.

When you’re done tanning for the day, remember to drink your water and apply aloe vera or lotion to soothe your skin.

Did you know that eating the right foods can actually help you tan better? It sounds crazy but it’s true.

Lycopene, a natural antioxidant found in red and orange fruits and veggies, serves as a natural sun protectant. Just by eating carrots or tomatoes, you can enhance your body’s ability to tan safely.

Another popular antioxidant that has surprising skin benefits is green tea. Caffeine can reduce your risk of getting skin cancer, and the flavonoids in dark chocolate can help you tan without getting burned.

On the supplement side of things, fish oil delivers loads of omega oils. These have so many health and wellness benefits (hello, shiny hair and healthy skin). Plus, beta carotene improves your skin’s natural ability to tan. Instead of spending money on so-called tan accelerating creams that don’t really make you tan faster, pop a beta carotene pill (or swig some carrot juice) to get your tan on faster.

  1. Build a gradual tan

It is much better to build up a gradual tan than to aim to get all your tanning done in one day. So keep following these tips to get the perfect natural tan and don’t worry if you seem to be making slow progress toward your goals.

Your body turns over skin cells every 10 days. If you don’t exfoliate, dead skin cells might end up blocking the progress of your tan by preventing the sun’s rays from reaching healthy skin. Use a gentle exfoliator to buff away dead skin cells, so you can keep increasing your tan until you’re as golden and tanned as you want to be. When you exfoliate, you help make sure that your tan comes on (and fades away) evenly. To avoid those telltale tan lines and look as naturally tanned as possible, exfoliate.

Building up a gradual tan does take time, but it is definitely worth it!
